How to Use VMware Player Portable for Local Virtualization

VMware Player needs to be install on the Host System, even if selecting its working directory to be on a portable/removable device/drive, however any Virtual Machines stored on that portable/removable device/drive and run on a different Host System will require VMware Player to be install on that Host System as well. In other words installing VMware Player to the portable/removable device/drive doesn't make VMware Player portable only the Virtual Machines are portable.

OK, i can isnstall player on the PC and on the portable hard drive. Can I install a normal version of windows XP pro on the portable drive with player on it? Can Install the 32 bit version of XP when my host system that is a 64 bit system?

hi sorry for my last post as there was a similar one below, but even when I ran it as admin other problems were created. needless to say I spent a wile doing research, and it turned out that only the most resent version (16.1.0) was supported by the windows host. and I know that time douse not grow in trees, but i would massively appreciate if you could help me out, as I lack the knowledge to create a newer version of the portable.Sorry for your troubles, Nathan.

  • COMMENT RULES: follow these or your comment will be ignored.Read FAQ page, it solves 99% of the problems.

  • Read the gray box above download links for details on this particular release.

  • If you already downloaded, make sure you read included release note.txt file which often contains more details and instructions.

  • Comment language: English or Italian only

  • REQUEST a new portable/plugin? NOT HERE. ONLY in Requests page is accepted.

  • Common issues (better explained in FAQ):Execution problem? Like missing .dll or other errors? Read FAQ.

  • Extraction problem? Use winrar 5.80+ to extract, not 7z.

  • Password? NO password needed, use winrar v5.80.

VMWARE player uses various dlls, and registry entries and sytem drivers to create the virtual drivers within the VM Machine. I had tried to get it to be portable. But on startup it looks to start services and reads registry entries within the os to start the virtualization of the real drivers on the machine. So there is no way to create the virtualization enviroment without installing these files to each machine and running the DLL registration for them.

I've tried QEMU from a keychain. Performance really terrible. It's too bad VMWare player won't work. That would truly be the killer app of portable apps... your whole PC! This can't be more than a year off from SOME source. Waiting...

I want to know that is it possible to create a fully portable virtual machine using any of the VMWare like products? My objective is to create a virtual machine (XP as guest OS), install some app in it, put the vm in a usb2 drive (performance is not a matter), and run it in any windows os (xp, vista, 7) without installing anything in host, using any host account (admin, guest, limited). Is it possible to do that using any vmware like product? If possible then which one is my best bet?

It doesn't look like VMware has anything that's "portable" and doesn't require installation first. However, I did find a portable version of VirtualBox, in which you might be able to build a virtual machine and make the whole thing turnkey runnable.

Want to use virtualization to create portable apps? This clip provides some helpful advice. It's easy! So easy, in fact, that this home-computing how-to from the folks at Britec can present a complete overview of the process in just over seven minutes. For complete details, including step-by-step instructions, watch this video guide.

Published in 1987 by Incentive Software Limited, this revolutionary new engine allowed players to explore a solid 3D graphic environment with complete freedom of movement for the very first time in videogame history.

VMware ThinApp is an application virtualization tool that helps you build any types of portable application quite easily; though looks complicated (I think there is no need to discuss about the technical aspect of VMware ThinApp in this topic).

3. After finishing the Prescan process, it will ask you to install software that you want to make portable (see screenshot below). Minimize VMware Thin App to system tray and install any application that you want to make portable. In this tutorial, I have installed Firefox 9 (Nightly build).

12. After finishing the process, you will get your own portable application, which will run on any computer.Copy your portable app (in this example both Nightly.dat and exe) on a pen drive and run the exe from any computer.

Portable-VirtualBox (P-V) works by downloading a copy of Oracle VM VirtualBox, customizing it according to your instructions, and then packing the resulting files for distribution on a USB drive or other portable media. When you run P-V, all the necessary kernel-level drives are registered and started automatically. When you close P-V, it unregisters everything and cleans up after itself. It's a little like a PortableApps version of VirtualBox.

Update July 13, 2012: You can download the VMware Workstation 5.5 Disk Mount Utility here.

Earlier, I blogged about attaching VHD images and WIM files, so it is only fair that I introduce a tool that allows you to mount VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk Format) images. VMware's format is certainly one of the most commonly used imaging formats these days. The VMware DiskMount GUI is not, despite its name, a VMware tool. It is a DEVFRAM product, and simply consists of a graphical user interface for the command line tool VMware DiskMount (vmware-mount.exe), which is a part of the free VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit. As such, you have to first download and install this toolkit before you can use the VMware DiskMount GUI.

When you first launch the VMware DiskMount GUI, you have to tell the tool where to find vmware-mount.exe. If you installed VMware's toolkit in the default folder, then you can find it under C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit\bin\. The DiskMount GUI supports all of DiskMount's command line parameters, including those for remote virtual disks (ESX Server and VirtualCenter).

The VMware DiskMount GUI appears to have an option for overriding this snapshot setting. However, when I tried the feature, vmware-mount.exe just answered with a list of available parameters. My guess is that older versions of VMware DiskMount supported this feature, but newer ones do not.

The standard describes an "open, secure, portable, efficient and extensible format for the packaging and distribution of software to be run in virtual machines". The OVF standard is not tied to any particular hypervisor or instruction set architecture. The unit of packaging and distribution is a so-called OVF Package which may contain one or more virtual systems each of which can be deployed to a virtual machine.

After that select the type of operating system you are planning to install using the bootable USB drive on the Vmware Workstation player. Here we are selecting Linux because we are using a Manjaro bootable Pen drive.

Going by our initial research and criteria, we settled on nine external desktop hard drives and five portable models to test. We first tested them using the benchmarking program HD Tune. For a more real-world measurement, we then timed the transfer of a 15 GB Blu-ray movie and a 31 GB folder of music. We performed each test six times, and we determined the average read and write speeds to rule out performance hiccups. After comparing results for each drive, we took the top performers and timed their backups on a 2019 MacBook Pro using Time Machine. 2ff7e9595c
